This is the question. Do our compressed mattresses need to be boxed or not. A few things to note.
The phrase, ‘A bed in a box’ is all very good and maybe it helps to sell mattresses but there is an arguement. One of our retailers in particular says that everyone is talking about saving the planet and going green and that the boxes go straight into the rubbish. This is a good point. This company do not have their mattresses boxed.
The other thing to note is that it costs on average an extra 8 euro to actually buy the box initially. This extra cost is passed onto the consuımer. eg: The person who buys the mattress. Would you not rather have your mattress for 8 Euro cheaper.
As for transport costs. The average loading capacity of a 40ft HC container is 400 units. When these are boxed it cuts this amount by 50 mattresses which adds to the average cost of shipping each product. This cost is also passed onto the consumer.
A bed in a box does have advantages. Loading is symmetric. Storing in the warehouse looks better and more organized.
In the world of exporting the name of the game is too try to keep costs to a minimum. Wasting money on boxes does not make sense. We have on client who gets us to put boxes on the container flat so that he can box his own mattresses for those customers who ask for it but out of 400 units he will only get 50. Obviously, these customers are not thinking about the planet. Boxes do after all, come from trees.
At the end of the day if my buyers want their mattresses in a box, it is not my decision. Up to them.
